The iPad is a tablet designed and developed by Apple, primarily as a platform for audio-visual media, including books, newspapers, videos, music, games and web content. The iPad weighs 680 grams and is larger than a smartphone but smaller than a laptop. Apple released the iPad in April 2010 and sold 3 million units in 80 days. The iPad uses the same operating system as the iPod Touch and iPhone. With the exception of web apps, only programs (apps) approved by Apple and distributed via its App Store can be run on an iPad. The iPad is controlled by a multitouch display and uses a virtual keypad on screen instead of a physical keyboard. The iPad uses a Wi-Fi data connection for Internet browsing. Some models also come with a 3G wireless data connection which can connect to the Internet via the mobile phone network. The iPad is controlled and synchronised via iTunes on a computer connected by means of a USB cable.
