An operating system is a kind of software, consisting of programs and data, which runs on computers with one or more processors. The operating system handles the flow of input data and output data of various types. The operating system manages memory allocation in the RAM (Random Access Memory) and other memory locations in the computer. The operating system acts as a middleman between applications and computer equipment. Operating systems are found in almost all machines containing a processor; everything from mobile phones and game consoles to supercomputers and webservers. Microsoft Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS are all examples of operating systems.
