Instant messaging is a form of text-based real-time communication between two or more people. The people sending or receiving instance messages use computers or other units to communicate. More advanced instant messaging programs allow voice or video calls.

Instant messaging differs from e-mail, which sends messages to people who aren't logged on by sending them to their e-mail accounts. Microsoft Communicator, ICQ, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and Microsoft Windows Live Messenger are all examples of instant messaging programs.
