A mail client is a program which can send and receive messages. This takes place from other mail clients via a "post office" (a type of program) which is installed on a central computer known as a server. The mail client can listen to the post office if a message has arrived. When the message has arrived at the post office, the mail client can retrieve it.
An e-mail message can include text, images and attachments. Microsoft Outlook, IBM Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise and Mozilla Thunderbird are all common mail clients.
One common way of transporting messages via the Internet is to use the Post Office Protocol (POP) to send e-mail messages, and Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) to receive them.
